A laboratory model system for analysing microbial interactions occurring in anoxic estuarine sediments. ArchiMer
Herbert, R; Keith, S.
Defined mixed populations of Clostridium butyricum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Chromatium vinosum co-existed for long periods when grown in a single stage chemostat with glucose as sole carbon source. The nature and availability of the inorganic nitrogen source exerted a major effect on carbon flow in the experimental system. The data show that both the C. butyricum and D. desulfuricans isolates can utilise NO sub(3) as an e super(-)acceptor with an increase in cell yield. Under these growth conditions the free S super(2-) levels were lower resulting in more stable mixed populations. In addition the data show that the C. butyricum produces more oxidised fermentation end-products (acetate) when NO sub(3) super(-) was available and more reduced products...

Biophysical isopycnic-coordinate modelling of plankton dynamics in the Arabian Sea OceanDocs
Idrisi, N.; Romanou, A.; Olascoaga, M.J..
A Nutrients-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton-Detritus (NPZD) ecosystem model is coupled to the Miami Isopycnic-Coordinate Ocean Model (MICOM) to study planktondynamics in the Arabian Sea. Experiments oriented to testing the NPZD-MICOM coupled model sensitivity to variations in several parameters are performed. Particular attention is paid to the rates of detritus sinking and maximum phytoplankton growth rate. The coarse features of the blooms are captured by all the experiments considered, and agree with earlier models for the biological activity of the region. Intensity, duration, and peaks of the blooms are found to be quite sensitive to the parameter choices. The existence of an offshore deep chlorophyll maximum in the model is found to be closely related to...

Croissance de juvéniles de Nereis diversicolor nourris avec des détritus d'halophytes ArchiMer
Meziane, T; Retiere, C.
The comparative effect of the uptake of fresh and degraded detritus of halophytic plants, harvested from salt marches of the Mont Saint-Michel Bay (France), on the growth of a juvenile population of the annelid polychaete N. diversicolor (L.) was studied under experimental conditions in summer 1993. Fresh and degraded detritus of Spartina anglica, Halimione portulacoides and Salicornia europeae, as well as the green algae Enteromorpha sp. were distributed separately to homogenous set of juveniles for a 75 d period. The highest growth rate was obtained for worms fed with Enteromorpha sp. Administration of fresh detritus of a given halophyte species to N. diversicolor juveniles always leads to a significantly higher growth rate than did degraded detritus....

Diet of invertebrates sampled in leaf-bags incubated in a tropical headwater stream Rev. Bras. Zool.
Carvalho,Emerson M. de; Uieda,Virgínia S..
The diet of macroinvertebrates sampled in leaf-bags incubated in a tropical stream was analyzed on a spatial scale (one forested and one deforested area) and on a temporal scale (dry and rainy seasons). The macroinvertebrates were mostly represented by detritivores specialized in fine detritus (69%), followed by generalist detritivores (10% with a diet based on fine and coarse detritus), carnivores (10%), omnivores (8%), and one detritivore genera specialized on coarse detritus (3%). The detritivores exhibited a broad spatial and temporal distribution and were represented mainly by Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Diptera. Phylloicus sp. (Trichoptera) consumed mostly coarse detritus (CPOM) and can be classified as the unique specialist shredder in this...

Elemental composition of individual pico- and nano-sized marine detrital particles in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Mostajir, B; Fagerbakke, Km; Heldal, M; Thingstad, Tf; Rassoulzadegan, F.
The elemental composition of individual < 10 mu m detrital particles from Mediterranean surface waters was analysed using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-Ray microanalyser. Results show that carbon and phosphorus content per detritus volume are much higher in pico-detrital particles < 2 mu m (42 kg C m(-3) and 1 kg P m(-3)) than in 5-10 mu m detrital particles (20 kg C m-3 and 0.1 kg P m(-3)). The C:N:P atomic ratios for different sized fractions of the detrital particles were found to be 82:10:1 for < 2 mu m particles, 120:29:1 for 2-5 mu m particles and 308:37:1 for 5-10 mu m particles. The average ratio for all size classes of detrital particles (< 10 mu m) was 132:23:1. The differences in...

Fish assemblages in stream stretches occupied by cattail (Typhaceae, Angiospermae) stands in Southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rocha,Fabíola Carla da; Casatti,Lilian; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério; Silva,Alexandre Marco da.
Macrophytes are a major component of lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. As consequences of environmental degradation, species of cattail (genus Typha) may become dominant along streams. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure and feeding of fish assemblages in stream stretches under influence of Typha sp., also addressing the influences of temporal variation on composition, abundance, biomass, diversity, species richness, and feeding of fish. Six streams (labelled S1-S6) in the upper rio Turvo basin, southeast Brazil, with dense stands of Typha sp. in the instream and riparian habitat, were studied in six campaigns during three central months in both of the dry and wet periods, by using a standardized collection effort. Thirty-seven...

Foraging pattern and harvesting of resources of subterranean stingless bee Geotrigona subterranea (Friese, 1901) (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Barbosa,Fernando Mendes; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira; Paixão,Joana Fidelis da; Alves,Rogério Marcos de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT Flight activity of bees is influenced both by environmental factors and by internal condition of the colonies. Information about external activity of bees is very important, because it provides data of the species biology, supplying subsidies for the use of these insects in the pollination of crops. The present work aim to evaluate the flight activity of Geotrigona subterranea (Friese, 1901) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in natural environment. This study was performed on the Instituto Federal do Norte de Minas Gerais, in the municipality Januária, Minas Gerais State. Two natural nests were observed. The activities of bees of the colonies were recorded three days each month, during the period of December 2011 to November 2012, totaling 924 observations....

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...

USE OF FOOD RESOURCES BY DETRITIVOROUS FISH IN FLOODPLAINS: A SYNTHESIS Acta biol.Colomb.
AMADEU SANTANA,Ana Rute; WERTH,Martin; BENEDITO-CECILIO,Evanilde.
The present review investigated the sources of energy for detritivorous fish species in floodplains. Recent studies have shown that environmental changes that alter the terrestrial vegetation affect essentially the resource base in these areas, such as the detritus. In aquatic environments, especially floodplains, a major part of metabolic processes is supported by terrestrial detritus, which accounts for maintaining the detritivorous food chain. Thus, one way to evaluate environments changes is through isotopic studies of organic matter, which allows acquiring information about the quantity and quality of organic matter. This approach is required for understanding the interactions between the organic matter dynamics and its ecological effects, allowing...

Vertical distribution of pico- and nano-sized Dapi yellow particles at Dyfamed time-series station, NW Mediterranean ArchiMer
Tanaka, T; Rassoulzadegan, F.
We measured. abundance and surface area of pico- and nano-sized organic particles that are stained by 4'6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (Dapi), namely Dapi yellow particles. This study was done monthly from April 1999 to March 2000 from surface down to 2000 m at the French-JGOFS time-series station Dyfamed in the NW Mediterranean. Dapi yellow particles were always observed throughout the water column and the total surface area of Dapi yellow particles 0.2-10 mum ranged from 0.5 to 51.5 mm(2) l(-1). Dapi yellow particles were generally less abundant in the surface layer, greater between 70 and 500 m and decreased toward 2000 m. During the mixing period, Dapi yellow particles were homogeneous throughout the upper 200 m, suggesting that distribution of Dapi yellow...
